The little owl is more injured than I thought.The magpies had pecked so hard we could see the skull bones through a hole. He's in for some long R&R and a course of antibiotics.

I met Rexie again. She's doing well and getting fatter, but she's still small for an echidna. She seems to be enjoying her stay on the farm in the big cage.

H & R have about 28 kangaroos and wallabies, all orphans in various stages of growth. Little Clancy is a red kangaroo who stands just knee-height, while Bob (a red) and Bob2 (a western grey) stand almost 5 feet tall. They have reds, eastern and western greys, wallaroos, red necked wallabies and swamp wallabies. I also got to hold a very young brush tailed possum not much larger than my hand. She spends her day clinging to a toy teddy when she's not in the pouch. Poor little thing.

I also got to play with a whole bunch of cute little baby rats, but it's best not to get to attached to them because H&R also care for eagles and snakes.

Aw, poor little injured boobook! And poor little possum, that's one of the saddest images I've ever heard.

This is probably a very silly question, but it ocurred to me as I was reading this post for some reason. Are there any native (excluding the dingo debate) Australian mammals that are neither marsupial nor monotreme? Or are they all introduced species? I can't for the life of me think of any.

Bats, water rats, tropical tree rats, goobang mice, hunter river mice...

The list of placentals is Bats, Dingoes and Native Rodents. That's about it. the rest are introduced.

I saw a special on Animal Planet about people who foster joeys until they're old enough to be released on their own. They seem to be remarkably intelligent creatures.

I hope the boobook is okay. I love owls. Are you going to hame him?

Once the joeys lose the Fear and stop trying to run away, they learn real fast where the food comes from and what they can get away with. My friends have a number of cats and it's not unusual to see a long-nosed face poking out of the cat pile. Joeys see cats as an alternative pouch.

Naming the boobook is up to the people caring for him. I don't have the raptor training.

Nah. All she cared about was "people here! Food is here!" only to be disappointed when the food didn't show. She dug herself down into the dirt and wouldn't come out.
