On this day in 1966, the 108 young men of D Company of 2RAR based at Nui Dat met a force made up of the Viet Cong 275 Regiment and North Vietnam D445 battalion in the Long Tan rubber plantation. DCoy held back the 2500 strong army for 3 hours before artillery fire and the arrive of 1st APC Squad. forced the VC and Regulars to withdraw. 18 Australians were killed, along with at least 245 Vietnamese.
D.Coy received a Presidential Citation and the North Vietnamese forces did not directly engage Australian forces again. None of the 18 dead Australians were older than 22 years old.
