The thing that always suprised me

Is the size of their braincase. While not neccessarily tremendous, they've got a good bit of room in there, like three times more than equivalent creatures like hedgehogs or tenrecs.

Or most of the medium sized to smaller marsupials.
Cute little 'chidna.
