One of the major producers of vitamin supplements has had their licence pulled after dodgy production practises came to like. A lot of people here are talking about supplements now. One thing struck me: a lot of people are taking things like garlic and horseradish. I don't take those. I eat them. They're condiments! To me, "Did you take your garlic" sounds as odd as asking "Did you take your potatoes?"
"Yes, when I took my spinach and lamb chops."
"I took a steak and eggs last night."
"Every weekend I take fish and chips."
"I use a meat pie supplement."
When the doctor advised me to take more vitamins I started drinking tomato juice and eating more vegemite on toast. Oh dear. It's time to take some coffee.

Date: 30 Apr 2003 10:19 (UTC)I take seizure medications which destroy the body's ability to absorb vitamins and minerals from my food. It's absolutely necessary that I take supplements. I do take garlic, because it's a natural blood thinner and I can't have the synthetic ones. I need it because the seizure medications cause clots. Would that I could get it from simply eating garlic; I love the stuff. But that goes back to the first point.
I agree with you on principle though; there are too many out there who simply take them because they're too lazy to eat a regular healthy diet or because it's simply the current fad. There are still more taking herbal supplements because they assume incorrectly that since it's an herb it can't be harmful to them.
I sometimes wish the government would regulate their usage or at least put forth the research to verify herbalists' claims. Some of them are indeed quite good for certain ailments if taken properly. They do have one major drawback: taken in their natural form, you can't assure yourself how much you're getting. That's why so many of those supplements use standardized extracts.
