I wondered what Al-Jazeera's new English site would be reporting, so I entered http://english.aljazeera.net. I was rather surprised to see this page instead.. (screen capture)

Not authorized? How Odd.

Then Crikey had this little article where someone suggested the link to Al-Jazeera from Australia is being killed within Australia.

So I did a traceroute to 217.26.193.10

I got page not found, the one you get when the site isn't live, as opposed to not authorised, can get to teh arabic one just fine. Is the link for the english version known to be correct?

I seem to be connecting to the English page, but very slowly -- it's at 20+ minutes and has managed only 4 KB. When I tried it with MSIE, it popped right up with the "HTTP 401.3 - Access denied by ACL on resource Internet Information Services" error message.

I can connect to the Arabic Al-Jazeera.

I can't connect to the 63.60.63.37 address in Opera, but MSIE gives me a "this page cannot be displayed" error.

It was in the news a while back that the site was under

Yup, I got a "not authorized" followed a little later by the "not found" page you get when a site isn't live. I thought I'd heard something about the site being under attack by hackers, so that could be it too.

Bah. I thought only China blocked its citizens' access to certain "subversive" sites.

I think that they simply have misconfigured their site, or maybe they took it down for maintanance. Since it's a new thing, it might be down a lot for maintainance.

Or maybe they have been hacked and are fixing the site and disabled access in the meantime.
