Yes, just like [livejournal.com profile] lonita says. FYI, many streets in the US have been named for him over the past 30 years, and the name is frequently initialized in print and in radio traffic reports, like FDR (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) Drive and JFK (John Fitzgerald Kennedy) Airport.

Right! I'll add that to my acronym list. I knew you had a holiday but I'd never heard MLK before. I'd heard the other two.

Heh. It's American egotism striking once again. Some of us forget that there's a world that doesn't have a holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.

I'm afraid he just didn't make as much of an impact outside the US. 8)

They all should. I like the idea of having a public holiday for someone born the same day (but not the same year) as me. :)

His "I Have a Dream" speech was quite famous world wide. Much of this material was lifted from another writer, I understand, but Martin Luther King certainly made it famous.

A bit like Roberta Flack doing the only version of Gordon Lightfoot's "The First Time" that most people have ever heard.

heh, oh no, the American government uses those acronyms to screw with us poor US citizens, too. No doubt.

Now that the (correct) answer has been supplied, I'm very tempted to say that it's short for "MiLK" - a day for all Americans to celebrate milk, and the cows it comes from! ;)

I'm afraid you're all wrong - it's actually Malta Airport in Montana (http://home.hccnet.nl/de.bock/icao/iataairp/mcod.htm), United States, and any reference made to MLK is clearly inferring an imminent terrorist attack centred on planes taking off and landing from that location. Of course, these attacks will be instigated by the Y2K isolationists who decided to hide there and wait for the expected Armageddon to come, and are now planning revenge attacks to make up for the 3 years they've lost...

You realize of course that now you're on "the list" - the FBI & CIA will be monitoring your e-mail and posts very closely now.
Oh crap. Now I am too.

[I wish that part of me didn't think that this isn't a joke]
