An aquaintance from the coast turned up in town with these two. She couldn't leave them with carers.

She named them Lady and The Tramp. They are orphaned grey-headed flying foxes

They're pretty big. How old are they? And what's gonna happen to them?

The adults are pretty big, too:

Great pictures. What would happen if they didn't have those unique muzzles over their snouts?

Heh. I took those for rubber nipples, actually. As in baby bottle nipples. I could be wrong, though.

Yup. Binkies, dummies, pacifiers, etc. :)

They're about 8 weeks old, and when they're ready to fly they will be released back into the colony they came from. After their feed they get a back-rub, which makes them spread their wings and exercise. One day they'll realise what the wings are for and use them. They don't have to be taught to fly.

They are, as [livejournal.com profile] aiobheil guessed, rubber nipples. It's the flying fox version of a blue blanket. A blank (ie un-peirced) nipple is pushed through the lid of an eyedropper and folded over so the pups don't swallow the nipple. They're happy as long as they can suck on something.

And it sounds like you're right, judging from [livejournal.com profile] dewhitton's answer. FYI, I've noticed your comments around at various LJ's for several months, now. I'm going to add you to my friends list so I can be reminded to read your writings. If you like, add me to yours.

I'd be honoured. I've noticed your comments also, but it's seemed like you're part of a rather close-knit group, and some of those high-school lessons die hard for me. I haven't wanted to intrude. :)

My group is ever-growing, ever-shifting. A few people we already share in common like [livejournal.com profile] kenhighcountry, [livejournal.com profile] frawst and [livejournal.com profile] dewhitton have been on my list for almost all of the ten months I've been here. Pleased to be accepted by you. I lived in NC for several years. In what part of the state is Clayton? I just remembered that I knew a woman in grad school in Greensboro whose first name was Clayton, an old family name, I think.

Clayton is about a half-hour east of Raleigh. :) And, of course, I applaud your taste. Good men all three, though Den's the only one I've had the pleasure of knowing for longer than the life of my LJ. :)

Wow, what neat photos! Thank you for putting these up where someone could point me at them: I've been quite the fan of bats since I was a kid, but I've never gotten a good look at a flying fox's kits. My thanks to your friend who's fostering them, as well: chiropterae need friends.
And all I can think of in re: the longrunning pacifiers discussion, is 'I vaant to suck your binky'.
I'll shut up now.

[livejournal.com profile] browngirl referred me to your photos. They are soooo cute! I turned my laptop upside-down to get a better look at their itty-bitty faces sucking their noonies (the "oo" as in "book") -- that's what we always called pacifiers.

They are megabats, classed with blossom bats and fruitbats. They don't have sonar like the microbats.

Whoa! Those are *some* bats, Den! I'm used to seeing your pictures of tiny little critters, so I was completely taken aback when I reached the shot with the hand in it.

They are cute. In fact, they look almost cuddly, with so much fur.

How is it, IYDMMA, that the flying foxes will figure out flying on their own and not have to be taught? (I'm not arguing with you, just curious.)

After feeding, they get a back rub. It makes them spread their wings in happy-back-rubness, and the flap a bit and start grooming. As they get older the flap more until one day they go "Hey! If I flap and let go...!"

it all seems instinctive.
