The kiwis I mentioned this to attributed it to the ozone hole, which they informed me is right on top of NZ. Dunno how true this is, but yeah, NZ sun definitely has the burninating nature, and it definitely crispified us on that trip. These days, we have a Rule. If in NZ during daytime, wear SPF-elevety-gazillion sunblock. Even if it's raining.
