This is disturbing

This article on BBC World has some disturbing statistics, and I don't mean the bit about patenting salted chips.

Very disturbing indeed....I can understand some of the patents on foods so that whoever invented the improvement or the hybrid could receive assets any time the seeds were sold but it's rediculous to make people purchase seeds year after year. If the plants in question are self perpetuating, I never replace them until they stop producing. And, as a former farmer of 66 acres of hay and silage corn, I can tell you that cross pollination of fields does happen. We had canola and flax mixed in with our fields all the time; the plants came from the experimental fields that were upwind of us.
