Let me guess: your car doesn't run off unleaded.

55.5 litres = about 14.7 gallons US. Here (where we pay $4.55 US/gallon)that would cost $66.88 US which translates to $68.53 AUS.

Ouch for me, but more ouch for you. :(

$1.71 per litre. I wish it was that expensive here. It's only like $1.45 per litre. There's way too much car culture and the Family Van mindset must be crushed! That and the two hour daily commute. 9_9 Not to mention trucking. Bring back the rails!

Diesel is $1.95/litre here. Farmers and Truckies aren't happy. Neither are SUV drivers, but if they want to drive their kiddies to football then they have to put up with is.

Ouch! That's really bad.

At our current prices, that fill would have cost $74.03 CAD or $75.76 AUD

I've hardly driven my vehicle since March, and that was back when it was a mere $1/L.

For your amusement

The last time we had a spike in gas prices, there was a rash of SUVs and pig pickups getting torched, and taking a loss on the insurance, so the owners could get into something more economical. This time around, the insurance companies got smart. About 6 months ago, they sent out a letter to all their SUV and big pickup owners, saying roughly the following:

"We have terrific news for you! If your vehicle should happen to be stolen or destroyed, there is now a very good chance that we will be able to replace it with one of the exact same model within 48 hours."

IOW, don't even THINK about it, because it won't help. There's such a glut of SUVs and huge pickups in the used-car market that finding another one just like yours is dead easy.

I play the world's tiniest violin for them.

Last time I filled up (before the engine died ! Woe !), it was 45 litres for about £54 ... so $110 or so, equivalent to $2.45/l.

The pound seems to run 1:1 with the AU$, in that with many things I buy for $1 you buy for £1.

Still doesn't explain why books, DVDs and CDs are so cheap over there.

i drive a 1999 mercedez SUV (it was a hand-me-down from my mom after my jeep got totalled) and I'm only supposed to put premium in it. yesterday i put in midgrade because it would save me a ton. it really didn't save me much (still $30 USD for half a tank!) but i felt so liberated.

my hybrid has been on order for EV-AR.

Thank you for doing all that conversion for me :D

Where do you live that your gas is $4.55?? I had no idea there were places that were getting that high! Not for unleaded, at least. My dad lives in Oregon and drives a diesel truck. I think he said gas for him is running $4.80 these days. I'm in Austin, TX and am so incredibly thankful that our stations are still flirting with the $4.00 mark.. everyone is at $3.99, $3.97, $3.96..... no one has gone over $4... yet. Of course, now that I say that, it'll probably be $4 when I leave work ;)

I dont know where the other poster lives but here in the SF Bay Area of California gas is running $4.40 to $4.60 and its not difficult to find prices higher than that. 87 Octane unleaded. Other fuel grades are at or above $5

San Francisco Bay Area. They make it 30 miles north of us, so, of course, we pay a lot!

I'd love a hybrid, but a Prius here is $42,000. That's twice the value of my Camry. We won't see the Camry hybrid until 2010.

Of course, the hybrid I WANT is the Lexus GS450h.

$1100, and get in the queue.

We got an email from Bob Ould today! It sounds like he's doing well.

omg. i wish we had a metro rail line here. everything is so spread out you have to drive - even though it's a medium-large city.

seriously, i would take a shittyfail train even if it added an hour to my commute. i HATE driving 30 mins just to get to work on the SAME LONG-ASS ROAD
