Oh yeah, it's Hallowe'en

The doorbell rang, and when I opened the front door I was confronted by a 8 year old kid wearing vampire teeth, a black cape, and a viking helmet with horns. He was holding a plastic axe.

"Trick or treat!" he said.

I blinked at him. "What?"

"Trick or treat."

"What's that mean?"

"umm... You give me lollies."

"Why?"

"Cos it's hallowe'en!"

I blinked at him again. "Riiight. Sorry, I don't have any lollies. I have bananas if you like them."

"Ugh. No thanks!"

"Garlic saussage? Liverwurst?"

"EW!"

"Sorry mate. That's all I have."

"Okay!" and off skipped the world's only vampire viking.

Since when have we done Hallowe'en here?

since when? I'd say, Since Today

Vampire Viking huh? Sounds like he's a budding Pastafarian right there..

Which is why Halloween is going to take over the WORLD! :P

I'm really surprised it hasn't already.

I'm torn between terror and a strange excitement...:P

Mum's been getting away with handing dried apricots - its been a few years since the local kids tried us.

I'd have accepted the banana! They're more instant-gratification than lollies are. Unless you're the kind of person that crunches up the candy bit and it's all gone in seconds.

I'm hoping against hope that this neighborhood is low on kids. Because then the box of Nestle minis is all mine.

Since they stopped having it here in the states in so many places, maybe, for the fear of "terrorism"

We've had one kid here, too. We didn't have lollies either, so housemate [livejournal.com profile] aurellia gave him spare Ghost In The Shell comics. Heaven only knows what his parents will think...

We hand out books and candy to the ones here. I owe a bookstore so we have spare kids books coming out our ears. They genuinely seem to be delighted to get stuff like "My Teacher Fried my Brain" and "revenge of the Lawn Gnomes". Parents aren't always so keen on them reading stuff that will keep them up, but the sugar would have done that anyway. They might as well read something while they're at it!

Of course he went "EW!"
You offered *garlic* sausage to a viking vampireXD!
Another grinning Yish moment!

I live in a locked, intercommed apartment building. We have little bitty toddlers around, but parents seem to take their kids to the residential blocks with normal houses in my neighborhood. Thus I am spared being buzzed.

I skipped a halloween party last weekend because I couldn't think of a costume, but Vampire Viking (or V^2, if you like) sounds like the costume for all occasions!!

I wonder if the idea became more common in Australian culture due to TV stations buying up American shows? Maybe the Simpsons? Maybe a movie imported earlier on? No-one was celebrating Halloween in Cairns in 1986 when I lived there, but that may have changed.

The first time I heard of Hallowe'en being done here was not long after ET was shown. It's been building slowly ever since.

Trick or Treat! *hold out goodie bag expectantly* :D

*banana and liverwurst.*

I'm probably going to have a devil of a time getting [livejournal.com profile] james_b to catch onto the spirit of things when he gets here.

We love Halloween, of course we love all the holidays in their silly kitchy glory... him he's not much of a 'holiday traditions' sorta person. Guess we'll just have to drag him kicking and screaming into the fun of it. :)
