Pissed off with Elfwood.

Two of my stories must be removed because they contain "Graphic obscenities."

This is ME they are talking about!

And these are the stories.

Stone Width Inn and The Smith

Ok. Tell me where the graphic obscenity is in there? The only, only thing I can see is that somone might object to something that is in common use in Australia every day, used by everyone and broadcast on TV in advertisments. If I have to change my style so that I can't write as an Aussie then I will delet my entire story gallery.

Who's requiring the stories be removed?

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2002-01-19 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The Elfwood Review Board. Apparently both stories will be removed due to "Reason: (9) Graphic obscenities are not allowed on Elfwood."

I'd ask them to show you where the obscenities are, and if they either can't defend themselves, or are strict beyond your willingness to adhere, I'd put them (any or all) somewhere else.

If they are cheesed off about the use of the word bloody I have some news for them- they need to get a clue as to the definitions of "graphic" and "obscenity". Here in the US a judge would laugh it off the bench in court. It's not like your borders are displays of naked people with giant (censored) or the faces of Bill Gates and Tammy Faye Bakker or something. And you don't have a billion links to places full of exaggerated drawings of body parts! I'm not offended by use of the word bloody, Hell, I've been know to use the word every so often and I'm not even english! And it
*does* have a non profane use in terms of description. If *they* are then they are just a bunch of gits, and if they want to be foolish about it drop 'em like a rock and let the readership know why.

Just dropping my two cents. I *hate* people who see the devil/evil/etc everywhere every time they blink!

BLeah. %P I've heard Elfwood had some weird hardass and not-always-evenly-applied rules, but this is nuts. What's the obscenity? "Bloody", as someone else mentions? Crap, that's not an obscenity.

the only thing that I can see that might cause offence (if one is a total prude that is), is the repeated word 'shit' in "The Smith".. but then, it is in context..

gods some people need to pull their head out their asses

ah HAH! That's what it is. What about the other story?

[identity profile] ngarewyrd.livejournal.com 2002-01-19 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
like I said, I couldn't see what it was in the other story.. but then I might not have been looking for it..

I tried very hard to find an obscenity in the first story and could not. They must've been smoking something. I was really happy to see in a later entry that the stories will be allowed to remain, though. It's good writing.

OOooh

You dirty obscene bugger you!!

I never knew you had it in you 8-)

Checked the first story for obscenities ...

[identity profile] baxil.livejournal.com 2002-01-24 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
... and I have come to the conclusion that it is one of the following highly graphic phrases which caught the review board's attention:
  • "Camp bread."
  • "Slipstream."
  • ... Or the highly volatile and offensive term "turves."

Seriously. WTF? I am glad to hear that they're not going to be removing the stories after all; however, I agree with an earlier poster that you need to write a letter in response politely requesting that the "graphic obscenities" in question be pointed out to you -- or that, in the future, they at least expand their form letters a little bit so that there's room to explain what caused the story to get cut.

I'd just like to end this by saying that I will, for no good reason, now forever associate the phrase "graphic obscenity" with the word "turves." What the heck is a turve, anyway?

Turves

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2002-01-24 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Plural of turf.

OED: A slab pared from the surface with grass and herbage growing on it.
