Shelley

Meet Shelley. She is 20 years old, likes swimming, hiking and playing "Frogger."

shelley1

The results of playing Frogger on the highway: a cracked plastron. Inset: where the crack runs across her chest.

The crack is sealed with Selley's Neutral Cure Sillicone (Grey.) This will keep out dirt, water and bacteria during her rehab.

She looks very alarmed in that first photo!

Turtles always look like that even when they're happy.

[identity profile] hafoc.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
How can you tell whether a turtle is happy?

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
You can't. They always look the same.

[identity profile] wynther-knight.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see the crack. Good thing you're taking care of her. She's gonna be fine right?

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
I hope so.

Aww. How cute ^_^

Wow! If I'd been playing on the highway, I wouldn't get off nearly so easily...

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2006-04-18 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'd need more repairs than some sillicone in my chest.

no wait that didn't sound right.

I love that "What the *hell* is going on here?" look Shelley seems to have.Nice l'il beady eye! I assume she remained locked tight in her shell during administrative repair;).

Yay, turtle!

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2006-04-17 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
With little turtles like these the fibreglass bonds to the shell and doesn't shed properly, so it deforms the shell as it grows. Also it gets very hot as it cures, which is bad news for reptiles.

If Shelley had a larger, gaping crack I would use fine wire and superglue to suture the wound shut. When the wound healed I'd just cut the wire off and let the rest shed off naturally over time.

Waiter! There's a DOG in my soup!

I found this onna page about snake neck turtles. Better lock up Scruffy's good- oh's:D:

"Their diet in the wild includes frogs, tadpoles, small fish and crustaceans. In captivity they will feed on vitamin supplemented raw meat, small mice, fish, and dry puppy chow. They will also accept tinned dog food. "

While she's in rehab I'll be feeding her a natural diet. I don't want her to get used to Scruffy's food.

Diet

I Can't Believe its not Amphibians/Crustaceans?

She's not that specialist. Dog food and lettuce will be enough.

Reminds me of Dr. McCoy when he fixed up that wounded Horta.
