22 people have been arrested for lighting the current fires around Sydney. Four of them are 9 year-olds who will, under the present laws, be given a caution and placed on a good behavior bond and released.

The Premier of NSW wants to change the law so that young arsonists are NOT given a caution or warning and released. Instead, Mr Carr wants them to be punished. He wants them to do compusory community service in burns units at hospitals, and to aid in post fire clean-up operations.

now all he has to do is get that idea past a committee of do-gooders and whiners..

I think that it's a good idea, and if Australia has anything like a sponsored reforestation group/active program, that they be required to participate . And actively help to actually *do* it.Helping to plant a tree or three isn't beyond childrens scope- We planted a new tree at my grade school every arbor day (with supervision, but the kids got to help dig the hole and fill in the earth 'round the tree).
