You don't need to give up your ad filtering. Adblock 0.5.3.042 (https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?application=firefox&id=10&vid=10706) works well according to those who have used it with our leak tester.
Adblock Plus 0.6 (http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/) also works well.
Dunno how I'd live without Adblock. While I don't mind static ads, bouncing, flashing and ones that make noise drive me insane. I've also found a deep loathing for "intellitext" which makes green links double underlined and if your mouse bumps over it, it opens up a pop up link box thing to an ad. I just recently figured out how to block those too, just by blocking the .js script that is loaded with the page that runs those things and the green links of doom are gone.
However sometimes you do have to remove and reinstall the thing, especially after upgrading firefox. Also, sometimes a site that hosts ads also hosts images for some commercial sites. I found the one runs the images for Delta Air lines and had to carefully adjust my adblock filter to let just them through :)

I don't get that many ads, but whether that is because of Firefox or I don't visitmany sites, I am not sure.
