I've just ordered the meat for our christmas lunch. We'll be trying to work through 4kg prawns, 1kg smoked salmon, 10 balmain bugs, 1doz. green-lipped mussels, a chicken and a leg of ham. And rabbit food, of course. Gotta have salad. My brother will be bringing 3doz. oysters from Port Macquarrie with him. Beer will be quaffed. I can see much quaffage in the near future.

I must dig out my beating stick to keep the otters at bay.

Sounds yummy... I have no idea what I'll be having.. accept that it won't involve seafood and it will involve pavlova (yumm!!). I haven't figured out what The Traditional Aussie Christmas Dinner is yet.

depends on how recently your family migrated to these shores.

My family is *JUST*, after 49 years, starting to consider that it may not be necessary to have the full english midday dinner - with roast turkey, roast pork, roast veges, gravy, pudding (with hot custard), mince pies, christmas cake ...

over the years we've had it even on days when it's hit the high 30s (Celcius, close to 100F)

this year we're planning a baked ham, salads, pudding, and mince pies.

some old habits die hard. :-)

Mum might do a pork and crackling, and bake the chook, but the pork will be the only hot thing on the table.

When my parrents were in Mexico, they made a traditional thanksgiving/christmas dinner (our tradition) and the Mexicans were not interested in any of it: never seen creamed corn (but half their foods are made of corn) never seen gravy made before, stuffing in the turkey was completely alien an idea and even the turkey was an usual meat item. Now add the German parogies and the Norwegian Lefsa we always have with sour cream (another rarely used item there) and the Mexicans decided to make their own food instead.

There isn't a tradition as such, just things imported from other countries and a Pav. In my family it's traditional to eat bags of seafood. And a pav.

How can anyone not like a pav?

The kids weren't overly impressed with the guava (least I think that's what it is - I'm braindead at the moment and having trouble remembering names again.... orangey colour soft mushy fruit, lots seeds... papaya! thats it) But Jess liked it Ok with the peaches instead :)

I think it was the passionfruit that Jessica didn't like.

I'm not keen on passionfruit either. I'd rather pile on the berries and cream.

My mother has a pavlovian reaction ... passionfruit must be applied ...

We never have a pav.

My mother doesn't like it, so no-one else gets to eat it either. ;-)

I'll be there promptly at 1PM with additional quaffage in hand and appetite in belly :)

CYa!

No worries, be prepared to fight the other 14 people for food. I'll set aside some good Aussie vintages like Cascade, James Squires Porter and Coopers Pale Ale. The others can have their VB.

I would have to live across the ocean. Phooey:(.

Muah-hah-hah-hah-hahhh!

*twirls his whiskers*

My dear fruitbat...you failed to stop me last year. What makes you think this year will be any different?

I didn't see you here last... oh bugger.

Pav?

Balmain bugs? Huh? Lost...

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2005-12-19 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Pav == Pavlova, a dessert that is mostly a merangue about 24" across.

Balmain Bugs == slipper lobsters caught off Sydney, not to be confused with the inferior Moreton Bay Bugs which are slipper lobsters caught off Brisbane.
