Looks like Winter is here. It's snowing just down the road*, in Orange. The roads to Sydney are closed. Temperatures here MIGHT reach double figures but I doubt it. It's snowing, but Dubbo's altitude is too low for it to land, so it melts on the way down and lands as a bitingly cold drizzle.

Drizzle is a funny word.

*tries to put a postive spin on drizzle*

Rain, sort of. Pity it is so cold it will kill plants anyway.

Batty question

Can I pick your brains regarding your bat-fu?

Only my sister believes she has one roosting in her chimny behind the (unused) fireplace during the day because they couldn't find anything during the evening and can hear flappy noises during the day. Sounds like a largish body and not a micro bat.

That is the theory anyway - most large bats in the Sydney area tend to roost in trees - and a colony is pretty hard to miss.

Any thoughts?

Flapping during the day, it could be a sparrow or starling trapped in the chimney. You wouldn't hear bat flaps during the day.

Well, they did go looking yesterday evening in case it was a trapped bird but they couldn't find anything in the chimney.

The odd flappy sound began again this morning (which was what made them think it might be something nocturnal like a bat).

Oh it snows in Australia, just not here.

Every year an area larger than Switzerland is covered. But it's seasonal and all melts.

I heard they got snow as far east as Katoomba. I woke up to -2.2 here, just near the Badgerys Creek AWS (figure swiped from here (http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDN65066.shtml)).

If I wasn't feeling unwell, I'd probably sneak up to the mountains for a look (no, I haven't seen snow).
