Mallee Ringneck

11.30pm, I decided to have an early night but it was not to be. The phone rang to tell me I had an injured bird being delivered to me. A few minutes later a fellow arrived with a box containing "some sort of parrot, with a broken wing."

I opened the box and was instantly awake. My first thought was "Bloody hell! It's a paradise parrot!" but they've been extinct since the 50s. I had to look the bird up in my book. It was a Mallee Ringneck. He had a broken wing, so I took him out to the Zoovets this morning. I hope they can save him but it's a very small hope.

Update: A very small hope. The Zoovet had the euthanise the bird.

I've got 3-4 day old budgies here, happily in their nestbox with mom, making all sorts of noise. And I'm giving them fresh soft food every day, right (right now it's boild egg, moist seed, rolled oats and cuttlebone powder)? Problem is, I'm supposed to make the 250 mile treck to my parents house from Fri night to Sun night...I'm thinking that's too far to take them with (STRESS!) and to long for them to go without the moist seeds. Would sending them to a friends house be safe, or is any travel bad?

If they're happily in their nest with Mum, moving them might cause stress. She should be able to keep them fed on her own (it's what wild budgies do.) I think moving them to your friends for a couple of days would be less stressful than a long road trip. Ideally not moving them and having your friend check on them at your home would be better.
