This old community hall is all that's left of the town of Rawsonville, about halfway between Dubbo and Narromine. The village died from being less than 15 minutes from larger towns, and then the highway was realigned and raised so that it now runs along a 3m high causeway. Rawsonville is now a spot on a map and an unnoticed ruin below the level of the road.

About 50 years ago it was like Goolma, but it couldn't survive.

Those community halls are strange things. Occassionally they get shipped to new locations when a town dies - it always pays to read the painted out sign on the door.

I remember discovering a rowing club building completely MAMBA inland and way up a mountain range because its original town died. They had not even taken down the old trophy plaques - just given it a fresh coat of paint.

That looks like an interesting abandoned building and truck. There are a number of ghost towns here too, mostly built around iron mines that are no longer in operation.

Towns around here have a rural-based economy. They've been shrinking for years but generally hang on with a couple of houses clustered around a small shop or pub. They die when the highway is moved, taking the passing trade away from the shop. In the Old Days this town was half a day's ride away. Now I drive past there in 15 minutes.
