WOO HOO

I have on a pallet in my back yard a satellite dish and associated hardware for satellite broadband.

Who is supplying you? I can't get ADSL at work, and haven't looked at satellite yet...

Bigpond.

If you can't get ADSL you may be eligable for the HIBIS subsidy to get a satellite connection.

Outstanding! Does this me that Skype will be do-able?

Congrats!

If you're on the 500MB/month plan, it is going to be a bit tight trying to Skype. The latency could be a problem too.

The speed of light delay isn't that bad, is it? Although, it'd be cool to be talking to someonw and actually have SOL delay as a factor in the conversation. Very science fictiony. :)

A bit of googling suggests that latency on a satellite connection normally runs at ~600ms, compared to ~250ms or less for dial-up, and <50ms for ISDN, cable, ADSL and some wireless technology.

It would depend on if the connection is 2-way satellite, or satellite down/ISDN up. If it is a sat/ISDN combination, he wouldn't have any problems being heard, but would possibly experience minor lag depending on how the downstream is handled.

Personal experience (though I'm in the states, with the associated additional distance) says around 780msec, for two-way satellite.

Not all that great for gaming... ;)

Fine for just pulling data, but it is a problem if you're trying to do something in realtime.

Prezzactly. And there's all sorts of issues with my specific provider... suffice to say that it's not designed to be shared over a network, and you have to jump through some irritating hoops to make it work. And I *still* haven't gotten FTP (for example) to work on any computer but the one directly hooked to the modem.

... but it beats the heck out of dialup.

I'll swap you for a pair of hamsters and a well-greased wheel...

Yay!

A Bat with broadband will be a happy bat indeed, get skype :)
