Good grief. Anyone who thinks beer is more than a yummy beverage to drink needs re-education. If they want to appeal to the "youth market" they should make wine coolers, and leave the beer to us Adults.

You're making me consider a run through the rain that's falling at the moment, to reach the nearest decent pub (it was actually the second nearest decent publast year, but the nearest blew up a few months ago and they don't think they're going to rebuild it).

Thinking of beer and where you live, there's an advert on TV at the moment for Castlemaine XXXX Which has two Stereotypical Aussies propping up a fence whilst drinking the advertised brew, when a food trolley from an aircraft crashes into the beach in front of them. The trolley bursts open and a can of another brand of beer rolls out of the wreckage. The first Aussie says "I don't blame them" and they go on to extoll the virtues of their favourite brew. At the end of the advert another trolley hits behind them.
"That'll be the 7:35 from Dubbo".

We don't get the beer ads you see. What I don't understand is why you Poms prefer to drink fizzy Aussie lager brewed in Watford when you have such a large range of wonderful real beers available.


...I wonder how many people think Dubbo is a made-up name. 8)

Believe me, you're lucky that you don't see the ad's we get, although a few of them are reasonable and get a wider audience.

As to our preferred alcoholic beverages, there are regular attempts by various companies to make us think more highly of their product, usually with minimal results as British Bitter is very firmly entranched, and rightly so. And for those wondering about this, we don't sell warm beer because we can't look after the stuff. We brew our beers so they have their best flavour without needing to resort to artificial cooling.

Quite often those trying to change our drinking habits use humour to do so. XXXX is one of the companies that do this. They usually poke fun at our views of Australians and Australia, for example they have done a series of adverts recently. One is a man in an outback shack staring at an empty can of beer. Then he's on the radio, getting very poor signal strength.
"Merv calling base, Merv calling base".
No answer. He's just about to give up when:
"Base here, what's the prob Merv?"
"Send four X. I repeat, send four X"
"Roger that Merv."
Next scene he's lying on his bed with a crowbar (Jemmy or prybar) in his hand and hears a plane flying over. He rushes out just as a large crate lands by parachute drop. He pries the top off and goes digging in the packing.

A look of horror appears on his face and we move to see what's in the crate. There, very carefully wrapped are four eggs!

There's another one involving a tree, a backpack with cans of XXXX poking out of it, and several of those "traditional" widebrimmed hats with corks.

Fosters are just as bad at this as Castlemain.

As to the percentage of people thinking Dubbo is a fictional location, I'd guess around 80% of British people would say fake, 20% would say it's so weird it's got to be a real place.

I really grew to like English Bitter, and was quite happy to try anything. The only one that disappointed me was Whitbread's, but I don't know why. I had to order it in halves because pints took me too long to drink, and it warmed up in the mug and I had to WASTE it. (!) I like my Beer at Cellar temperature, and lager refrigerated. It makes a difference.

Whitbread are one of those mega companies that bought up a lot of very nice small breweries and "standardised" their product lines... to the lowest possible standard obviously.

Cellar temperature is fine, there used to be a pub about two miles from me which had a cellar where an underground stream ran right round it.

Ever try Boddingtons or Holts? Boddy's is smooth whilst Holts is a really bitter Bitter, and their breweries are only ten miles apart using the same watersource. They're both local breweries for me with good coverage of most of Britain.

If you're ever in Edinburgh, try and track down "Auld Reekie" in the hundred shilling version, which is so black it sucks the light from the immediate area and it takes about five minutes to pour a pint.
