I found out today that the fellow student who beat me to the tech support job at the University got a lower pass in the exam, and didn't get the CCNA1 certificate. It's a little discouraging.

The other candidate may have had some inside help pushing his resume along. It happens all the time...heck, I've benefitted from it myself.

I can understand why it would be discouraging. Just as others have said it may be because they had an inside track for the job or something like that. Hang in there, with good grades and the cert you should be able to get something.

You might have been overqualified. I don't know how it works in Australia, but here they like to hire someone on the lower end of the skills set to fill an entry level position. It means they can pay them less and offer them less benefits. It also means that the upper range they can earn will cap out earlier.

Polly's a cutie. I wish mine were as decently behaved. Mine would have had the computer unplugged by then.

My dog also hides under my computer desk when it's thundering. Even if try and call her to sit on the bed with me and get petted, she hides under the desk. Dogs are just strange.

Sorry to hear about the tech job... had a very similar experience a couple years ago with West Jet when they hired a weather station operator I knew who'd actually let her exams expire and had never worked in dispatch. And me and my 18 months experience and college education didn't even get a phone call. Smelled of nepotism to me.

But they're lovely puppy pix.. funny how hugging a puppy can make even miserable news better.

It's a sad fact of life that people make judgments not just on skills but on personality and things such as height.

I'm judged on age and looks.

You may be judged on being short.

It's also possible and indeed is a practice of some employers to research employees based on their postings on the Web and in newsgroups and make judgments based on those postings. (source ACS New South Wales mailing list).
