for some reason this makes me think of an ee 'doc' smith Lensman story.
there was a creature (not a robot, but not exactly sentient either) in one of his stories that looked just like a wheel - and spent its entire life rolling around the planet.
I just can't remember what the stupid thing was called. ah well, it will come to me.
