Watching the telly

I just saw Dr Who shut down a runaway reactor by reversing the polarity of the neutron flow.

He's obviously got mad science skillz way beyond those of you or I ;)

I love that guy.

Just goes to show, Montgomery Scott was Not the first to do that sort of thing *grins*

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2004-04-05 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
He's a BLOUSE! Dr Who didn't even use his sonic screw driver

[identity profile] ngarewyrd.livejournal.com 2004-04-05 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Too bloody right!

Don't diss the intergalactic screwdriver!

Everybody knows it's the space equivalent of duct tape!:D!

He also foils Daleks in a single bound:

"Just you try and shoot up *here*!"

because he knows they can't aim:D.

Well the neutrons obviously got so confused at being turned around the way they were already pointing that they just gave up and called in sick.

[identity profile] kelloggs2066.livejournal.com 2004-04-05 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, those evil Neutrons!

Won't they ever *LEARN*?!?

Have you heard that a new Doctor has been chosen (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3552087.stm), and new episodes written and are in production?

[identity profile] hafoc.livejournal.com 2004-04-05 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
So this neutron walks into a bar and sits down and orders a beer. The bartender draws a beer and hands it over.

"Good beer. How much is it?"

"For you, no charge."

Groan! Like this thread wasn't geek-filled enough with out the neutron joke!

haha

AUGH!

I agree with Weyrdbird. That requires handfulls of peanuts thrown in your direction.

There's two ways of looking at that:
either it's a massive achievement to reverse the charge of something which never had a charge in the first place
or it's quite obscenely easy because all you have to do is think about the concept of a neutron's charge in a subtly different way (it doesn't have a positive charge...it doesn't have a negative charge)

[identity profile] hafoc.livejournal.com 2004-04-05 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, actually you CAN reverse the charges on a neutron. All you have to do is convince it to say yes when the operator says "Will you accept this call?" And that's not much of a problem for Dr. Who. Everyone wants to talk to HIM.

[identity profile] twilightbanana.livejournal.com 2004-04-05 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's right, isn't it? Reversing the polarity works nine times out of ten. And if that doesn't do it, modulate the frequency!

Science is so easy in sci-fi ;)

[identity profile] wyrm.livejournal.com 2004-04-05 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You have to remember that he's a Time Lord with a vastly superior knowledge of Physics to mere human mortals. It's probably that he's trying to communicate something for which there isn't a word in English, but the nearest appropriate one is 'polarity' (which doesn't have to mean charge of course).
