Ricing up the PC

While I was buying a new power supply for dad's computer the techo at the shop put a customer's PC on the bench and said "Look at this." She then removed the outer casing of the computer and pointed at the CPU.

I shook my head. "It's a CPU."

She turned on the power. Behind the CPU fan a whold bunch of red, blue and green LEDs flashed on for a second. Then they began to flash in sequence. Red Green Blue Red Green Blue Red Green Blue Red Green Blue Red Green Blue.

I blinked. "What do you think?" she asked me. I blinked again.

"Put the case on for a moment," I said. She put it on and I examined the pc. There were no windows, vents or portals that let the light out. It was, to all appearences, a perfectly normal PC until you removed the case and it was all Red Green Blue Red Green Blue again.

The pointlessness of the mod is utterly breath-taking. It's like taking a bog-standard 1969 Kombi van and chrome plating the air filter. WHY would you spend money on that?

For the sheer randomness of it all! Or maybe they have to spend a set amount of money on their computer each day or suffer a TERRIBLE FATE! Or it could be, you know, stupiditiy.

I'll take no.3, thanks.

Why indeed - maybe ask some of the boyz that question, they obviously must have the answer... ;-)

To impress the chicks, of course:D!

That is, if they ever have the chance to open their computer *and* also have a naked woman in the room at the same time. If they bother to remember:D.

"Wanna come back to my place and watch my computer process, baby?"

Sorry, couldn't resist:D.

I can definitely see them forgetting about the naked woman once the case is off and those blinking lights take their attention... :)

Hey, I have glowy fans!

...but I also have a window on the side of my case.

Perhaps there's a blink code for CPU errors when the keyboard isn't working.

I'd mod my desktop, except that the box currently lives inside a leg of my desk. If I ever get a computer that's exposed, I'm putting an aquarium in it. :D

But yeah, that sounds kind of silly.

Well, perhaps the owner is doing the modding piece by piece. This may just be one of several intended modifications, perhaps ending with a clear case. Personally, I'd want the windowed case last of all, so that there's something inside to actually be worth looking at rather than just more computer parts, you know?

[identity profile] dewhitton.livejournal.com 2003-08-14 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
case? My computers rarely keep a case on long enough to bother modding them.

I forget to dust plus we have six cats. Gotta case them suckers round here. :) Besides, the case can be considered either the frame for the mods or an important facet in the modding process, depending on if it's just a window or more of a canvas for its own decorations.

I think when one gets geeky enough the point of the mod becomes more Zen-like. It doesn't really matter any more if anybody sees it. The mod is. You know it's there and that's all that matters.

Zen modding. I like that idea a lot!
