Win2k help (This is a serious question)

A friend has 2 PCs running Win2kPro, but only 1 modem. He wants to set up the system so both computers can access the internet but he oesn't want to use W2kServer.

How does he do it? more specifically, how do I do it, since I'm the one who'll be helping him. Anyone point me to a good resource?

oh... and the computer with the modem is running Win2K AND WinXP. He prefers to use XP over 2K, but some of his book keeping software doesn't run under XP so he has to boot into 2K. Will that cause a conflict I should be aware of.?

True, but unhelpful 8)

Not amazingly helpful but really the 'easiest' way to go is to get a hub, a cheap PC (even early P 90) and stick Linux on it, then stick the modem on that linux box.

Of course, if it's a WinModem then he's SOOL.

I know, but he doesn't want any more computers or extra network. My first option was your suggestion.

internet connection sharing should work on w2k pro ok.
As well as it ever works anyways.

hmm, perhaps putting a splitter of sorts between the two computers and connecting the modem on that? so he doesn't have to have both computers running at the same time?

(this is assuming of course, that the modem is an external)

but then again, what would I know? =8P

If you don't mind having just simple net access (http, ftp, and some socks support), and as long as the computers are networked together:

Go here: http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm (http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/proxy.htm) and get the proxy program. Install it, and set it up on the computer with the modem. Then, on the second computer, on a per-program basis, set it up to use the specified ports (try readme.txt) on the host computer, using the host computer's IP address as the "proxy server" (should be something like 192.168.0.1).

This will give you full net access on the main computer, and partial on the second. I've found it to be quite reliable.

His best solution is to buy a cheap router (these days good routers are cheap like borscht) but if he can't afford that kind of outlay then his next best option (IMO) is to set up the modem in the XP system and then enable an internet gateway for the 2K system.

Here (http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/internetgateway.htm) is a tutorial on how to set it up:
