Tonight Rexie exceeded the magic 700g mark, so she's at release weight. Tomorrow I'll grab a bucket with a lid and dig up a termite nest, and put it and Rexie in the plastic sandpit tray we use to wash Polly.

A couple of weeks of termite training, and I think she'll be ready for the bush.

Yay! Go, Rexie! (And kudos to you for taking such good care of your rampaging puggle!) I've been following Rexie's saga with great enthusiasm...now I'm just curious to hear about how the heck one digs up a termite nest. (Do they bite? Or sting, or something?)

Awww.

It will be sad to see her go. I've been very interested in her progress - it's not normally something one gets to watch. Still, I know it's best for her to be released - how do you deal with that, Den? Don't you get fond of them?

And ditto the termite question above. I hate the lil buggers.

Termites aren't dangerous unless you're made of wood and stand still for long periods. I'll be going after the mound-building type, where the soldier ants don't have pincers. They have instead a nozzle on their forehead that squirts out a sticky gunge that glues up the attacking ants. I suppose to an echidna it's like a salad vingrette.

Or something.
