(no subject)

I took her to the vet at the zoo. They examined her properly.

She had lost all her no.2 finger, and most of her no.3 and no.4 fingers.
That's about 60% of the wing. She'll never fly again.

I left her there. They'll put her on pain-killers tonight and euthanase her
tomorrow. The delay is because they have to take tissue and blood samples
and get them to Geelong to be tested for lyssavirus, and they can't do that
tonight.

I feel like shit.

You gave her all the help you could, and she is the better for it.

If I should get to the point where I can no longer function in this world, I hope that some kind soul will be kind enough to take care of me in the same way and not just leave me to fend for myself.

I'm sorry she lost so much wing, sweetie.

I'm very sorry to hear that news. She's such a beautiful creature, from your description.

Poor bat. Poor Den. :(

[identity profile] tygermoonfoxx.livejournal.com 2003-03-03 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you've lost your bat but with that much damage, it's for the best. A bat that can't fly, can't feed or do anything else. She'd be at a disadvantage and she'd slowly die of starvation. You're allowing her to die with dignity and in comfort. You did the best you could.

*hugs*

Aww, damn. Well, it probably doesn't help much, but at least this way she'll pass comfortably, with relative ease instead of the unpleasant alternatives in the wild. My sympathy to you--I'm sure you know all the reasons it's a neccessary thing, and I'm sure it still sucks anyhow.

[identity profile] arcturax.livejournal.com 2003-03-03 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
At least you tried and gave her what comfort you could... Better than her dying alone in the wild and unable to fly.

Thanks Batty for doing all the good work you do, you try to save every one you come across and that's what counts.

Hey, you treated her very well. It's okay.

Dammit, both of my rescuer friends have lost someone this week.

Much hugs to you, dear.

I'm sorry. She came to you because she needed the help you could give. I know that sounds sappy and doesn't help much, but it's true.

You rock seriously for doing this.

poor den :( You're having a rough week *hugs*

at least you do what you can, man. That's more than a lot of people can or will do... thanks for being a rescuer, since the bats and such can't thank you really themselves.

Damn, man. It's a cruel world. But you know you did your best.

You did the best you could. That's all that matters. Saving them all would be great but Mother Nature doesn't work that way. :) Just think of the ones you were able to help and hopefully that will help you feel better.
