H Bat

A lady came to my house and handed over a tiny, wet bat. She'd found him swimming in 6 inches of water at the bottom of a 200 litre (44gallon) drum.

He's a little forest bat, and judging by his size he's another youngster with a shiny new flying licence.I'll have to weigh him when he dries out, but right now he's 3.5 grams. I guess he'll dry out to 3 grams. He's a little thin but not too thin. A few days dry R&R should have him flying again.

What is it about young bats and water? It must be a combination of the hot days and poor flying skills.

Anyway. H bat needs a name.

Name?

My male budgie is named Hedwig, as he looks a fair bit like Harry's owl, and is macho enough to handle it. :)

Best suggestions so far: Hagrid, Hoggle, Hatchet and Horrible.

Hagrid is a bit rich for a creature weighing only 3 grams, isn't it? How about Harold?

I dunno, I kinda like the irony of it. Tiny fuzzy little Hagrid :)

LOL. that was my thought too.

He was in water so...Horatio?

My suggestion would be Hurtle ?

Horace?
Henry?
Hermione?
Hedwig?
Hulahoop?
Hehehehehehe......

I wonder if bats are willing to chase prey (like a moth for example) over a body of water if inexperienced enough (or just determined).
Oh well, it's just a thought:D.

H names, eh?

Hubert...Humphrey....Honk (maybe if they had the ability to do so they wouldn't fall into water? *Giggle*)

Horace, one of the gods of Egypt

Of course I'd pick something like that ;)

Oh, or (going for geek points here)...

Hugh! Which is what they named the lost borg they found on Star Trek.

Three Grams?

My commonsence test tells me that the bat weighs as
much as 3 raisins. How big is he in terms of
wing span?

Given that he appears to be a somewhat amphibious bat,
I have to suggest naval aircraft :)

Hornet
Hellcat
Helldiver
Harrier

I second Horatio!

Hamlet (To bat, or not to bat.)
Holmes
Harvey
Hiro (Protagonist, one assumes...)

and there's always the Mayan hero of the Underwold, Hunahapu, but that seems like a big name for a teeny little bat to carry around.

Good luck with H-bat!

They're probably all thirsty.

As for a name...how about Heru'ur (http://www.kemet.org/glossary/heru-ur.html) (the eldest Egyptian god of the sky).

Harold, Henry, Harvey, Hagrid, Helen, Headley, Hank, Herbert, Howard, Hiram, Hershel, Harcourt, Handel (as in "Handel's Messiah"). Whew, how's that!?

(It's too bad we've passed the "D" names already - you could have called him "Di Fladermouse" which is German for "The Bat".)

Die Fledermaus is the correct spelling. "Die" pronounced as "dee" and "maus" rhymes with "ouch!"

Why thanks! I wasn't sure if I'd spelled it correctly or not; it's been years since I've seen the opera.

I reckon it's the perfect name for a really vicious bat that bites all the time. :-)

Hula?
