Today's Travels in blue, on page 2.
The day started cold and wet and stayed that way, apart for brief moments of getting colder and wetter.
We headed southish to Audley End, a large manor house built during the reign of King James 1. Some time during the early 1700s to remove the East and West wings so that the house was more manageable. The landscaping was by Capability Brown. (He did landscapes, not gardens.)
What is left is huge. The guided tour through the house took over 2 hours. It was rather detailed. The interiors are a mix of Jacobean, with remodeling by Robert Adam, and re-remodeling in the mid 1800s. The gardens are huge and have follies in the far distance.
There is a miniature railway on the grounds but that only runs on weekends.
After a nice lunch in the tea rooms (steak & ale pie, and chip wedges) we wandered around Essex for a little while, then headed back to Huntingdon do do some shopping. And then to home.
