My journey through Eastern Europe continues despite the disappointing start.

Urquell is a pilsner from Plzen, in the Czech Republic. This is the original pilsner.

Pilsner Urquell

The bottle opens with a slight hiss. It pours a clear, deep golden colour with a small creamy white head that lasts for ages. There is a lot of carbonation bubbling up from the bottom of the glass.

First sip: WHOA HOPS! And yet smooth. Too much for my taste - it hides the malt. Nice carbonation tingle on the tongue with a lingering lemony sourness.

I got used to the hops the more I drank. I went from Whoa! HOPS! to mmm hops by the half way mark. Once I got past the hoppyness I could taste a bready malt in the background. This is a good beer for heavy meat dishes - possibly goulash, chevapi or a game meat such as venison.

A beer to drink slowly.

Same again, Sir? Yes, just a small one. And a few more chavapi too.
