Anyone know how to get Netscape 7 to show the alt text on images that have loaded?

Unfortunately, the answer is “View Source”

The point of alt text is that it is for display when the image isn't loaded. If the image loads, the alt text is supoerfluous. If the alt text provides any information that the image doesn't, it's not alt text. The display of alt-text in addition to the image (i.e. in a tooltip) is a Bad Thing, because it means that browsers that rely on alt text end up getting the wrong thing. People writing for visual browsers put things in "alt" that make no sense unless you can see the image, which defeats the purpose.

To have a tooltip display over an image, the page author should use the title attribute instead.

oh.

I was just wondering, because on the BBC news site they show a little pic and an ambiguous heading, and have extra details about the story in the alt text. it's a pest.

(will chat later re java)
