I've been up to Lick before. Spent a few hours sitting under the three meter telescope as it was working. :) Stayed up all night, watched astronomers do what they do. it was a prize in my intro to astronomy class. My astro teacher, Alex Filippenko, had an essay contest/creative works contest. (It started as an essay contest, 500 words on "why we wanted to go to Lick", but morphed as people started getting creative.)
I submitted the Astroloid, an interstellar tabloid. The motto was: "Who needs truth when we've got a whole universe out there to distort?" And he loved it.
So yeah, that was one of the best nights of my life, and Alex has remained among my favourite teachers since.
