Wellington Vintage Steam Meet

Steam! Old cars! Old motorbikes! Old engines! Lots of photos!

Not as many exhibiters as last year and no steam cars, but the traction engies and vintage car clubs were out in force. Photos to come.

One exhibiter spent 4 years rebuilding an old car into a hot-rod -- ie, buggering up a nice old car -- and drove it to Wellington yesterday to show the car for the first time. He hit a kangaroo. Now one side of his car is all gleaming chrome and highly polished metal, while the other side is... not so nice.

Pictures! Pictures!

It's always good to see the things that have been, and been restored to proper use. Past eras have been much simpler. I remember my grammas chevrolet with the fins. She traded it in for an ugly gray Nova buzzbomb car. I remember being very disappointed in her choice. No impression *at all*:P. Now with a V8 and a new coat of paint and some bodywork...well it wouldn't have been a Nova any more;).

It's still odd to me that you can hit kangaroos, but that doubly sucks for that car. Massive damage or just... messy damage?

I would wager, "both"

Not very messy, but there are some tufts of fur in the paintwork

It depends where they hit. The body is large and solid atop long legs and long feet.

Unless it is a side swipe like this one, the roo tends to join the unlucky driver and passenger in the front seat.

I had a friend equate it to a deer or moose. But Moose will 'win' almost 95% of the time.

It seems oddly common too. A friend of mine hit one the other month. And now I am hearing about another...

So how much structural damage did the car take?

The car in the show got relatively little damage and was still drivable. My work truck wasn't so lucky. (http://dewhitton.livejournal.com/633199.html)

How often does this happen?

Around here someone hits a roo every week. Not the same someone; that would suck.

Hehehe. Either his name is Murphy or he's aiming.
