batless

I am batless once again. I'd kept Florence longer than I would have normally because she had a 5mm tear in her wing. I wanted to see it heal a little before she went bush. Over the last seven days it had reduced in size by half. I decided it was time.

She munched 10 worms and drank some water, then I loaded her and the tent into the car and headed out to her estate on the edge of town. It took her ages to do her grooming. She sat on my hand and goomed, and groomed, and groomed. Then she looked around for a while, stretched her wings... and folded them up. Then she stretched her wings... and folded them up again. I began to winder if she wanted to go.

But she did. After few more minutes of looking around she pooped on my hand and launched into the night.

Well done!

Great news. How did you become a bat rescuer? It's rather an unusual hobby.

I joined a volunteer animal rescue group, and when the opportunity to have government-funded rabies injections arrived I jumped at the chance.

It's not just bats. I rescue wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas, owls, falcons, eagles, possums and gliders. I've even helped glue the feathers back on eagles wings.

I'm sorry that you're batless because I know you enjoy your little bat companions but I'm glad that she was able to be released. There will be more bats; there always are :)

Yay! Good work! :)

Somewhere out there, Florence is probably regalling other bats with the tale of her mystical journey and encounter with the Great Human Spirit Who Feeds Worms, or whatever bats do in this situation. Well, that's great! Go, Florence! I look forward to hearing about your next case...

It's nice she left a little something to remember her by before she took off ;-).

Yay!

Maybe she had to smell the wind and decide which way to go:).

Cool...Flo has flown.

I think that is exactly what they do. They always sniff and ping for ages, and it makes me wonder if they're getting their bearings.

There's a chance she'll meet one of the other 31 bats I've rehabbed. "Hey yeah! I KNOW that guy! I bit him hee hee hee."

Congratulations for successfully, ah, unloading another bat.

Heh :-). My Dad tells stories about how he must have developed a whole new lizard cosmology around the house: his cat would hunt lizards in the backyard and bring them into the house to play with; Dad would rescue them and put them out in the front yard, where they doubtless exchanged stories with all the other lizards about the great furry demon and the huge benevolent god.
